Ricardo Lopez Murphy is an Argentine economist and politician. He was born on December 10, 1951, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He received his undergraduate degree in economics from the National University of Buenos Aires and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
Lopez Murphy served as Argentina's Minister of Economy from March to April 2001, in the government of President Fernando De la Rua. He implemented a set of harsh austerity measures to stabilize the country's economy, which was mired in a deep recession at the time. However, his policies were widely criticized, and he was forced to resign after just 20 days in office.
After leaving his post as economy minister, Lopez Murphy founded and presided over the Political and Economic Studies Foundation (Fundación Estudios Políticos y Económicos), a conservative think tank. He ran for president of Argentina in 2003, but his campaign was unsuccessful. He has also worked as a consultant for several international organizations, including the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank.
As an economist, Lopez Murphy has written extensively on economic policy, fiscal sustainability, and public finance. He has been a vocal critic of the protectionist policies of many Latin American countries and has advocated for free-market reforms. He is considered to be one of the most prominent conservative voices in Argentine politics.
